Psychological Bases of Coaching Athletes
Instructor: Andy Driska
Psychological bases of coaching athletes allowed me to gather my coaching and administrative philosophies for coaching, teaching and working with athletes. This course provided a great overview of items to consider when developing a coaching philosophy and what psychological aspects your athletes might have. While this course helped us develop our coaching philosophy, it also allowed us to consider opportunities of dealing with parents, administrators, and athletes.

KIN 854 provided valuable insight into the legal and administrative issues that surround athletics. Our instructor gave us a very basic overview of tort law and was able to provide real life scenarios of issues that have occurred within athletics. This course was able to open my eyes to issues other than playing time and wins and losses within athletics.
Psychology of learning really opened my eyes to different ways individuals learn and comprehend information. What might be very stimulating for one individual is not stimulating for another. This class allowed me to put into perspective, what I am teaching my student-athletes and how understand that information. This class also made me look at the “classroom” setting in which I was teaching. Were there a lot of distractions? Are my students able to focus?

Budgeting and finance in higher education was a course that gave me a macro view of budgeting in colleges and universities. Sometimes to be a good leader, you need to be a even better listener. You need to understand what the group of people that you are trying to lead and motivate.
